Cannabis-Connoisseurs already know delta-9 THC, the psychoactive substance in marijuana. The present article describes another form of THC, delta-8 THC, increasingly current on Amsterdam coffee shop menus. Delta-8 THC has a very different effect from delta-9 THC because it is an active substance in its own right.

Delta-8 THC is also called dronabinol or Marinol, the synthetic form of delta 8 wholesale available on prescription since 1985 for treating nausea and vomiting that have not responded to standard treatments. When ingested orally, the absorption of delta-8 takes longer than smoking or inhaling cannabis but also has a longer lasting effect.

The difference between natural and synthetic forms of delta-8 is that the body can metabolize natural delta-8 into other substances, including 8 and 9 thc. Natural forms of delta-8 THC are produced by running an electric current through olive oil in which powdered cannabis buds have been soaked for about 10 minutes; the product is widely used in Italy, but it has never spread to America or Holland because creating it is not cost-effective.

Delta-9 THC enters the bloodstream quickly after smoking or inhalation. At the same time, oral ingestion leads to slower absorption – nevertheless, there’s a kind of ‘rush’ or ‘buzz’ also associated with delta-8 THC, which is described by some as more cerebral than the ninethc high, but just as strong.

Delta-8 THC can provoke feelings of ecstasy and euphoria, so it’s not surprising that users of dronabinol claim it eases symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety attacks and depression. It has little effect on memory function, unlike ninethc, which explains why people with amnesia have no trouble remembering things after they’ve smoked some weed.

It seems likely that more information will become available about the effects of delta-8 THC shortly; after all, scientists are testing it for its anti-cancer properties, suggesting that it may become an essential treatment for the disease.
