Tips for Choosing the Right Halloween Costume

There are two reasons why people look forward to Halloween – it is a holiday and you get to wear whatever you like. If you look forward to Halloween because you get to wear something else, you should start preparing now. There are many costumes out there but if this year your theme is about Japanese anime characters, you should start with Totoro or No-Face.

Totoro is a character from My Neighbor Totoro released in 1988. He is a spirit of the forest, which is somewhat a combination of Tanuki (Japanese raccoon dogs), cat and owl. He is an adorable character, which makes him 18th on the Empire’s 50 Best Animated Film Characters list; he is also ranked 24th on IGN’s top 25 anime characters.

There is no doubt that Totoro became a cultural icon. There’s also No-Face, another spirit, and character from Spirited Away released in 2001. These are all from Studio Ghibli – the same studio that brought Princess Mononoke, My Neighbors the Yamadas’, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya and many more.

Now that you know what you want to wear this Halloween, it is time to consider other things to ensure that you have the right one. Here are some tips:

Read the fine print

It is easier and convenient to buy a costume online. If you start looking for a Totoro costume, you should know exactly what costume pieces and accessories you are getting before purchasing. With this, you need to read the fine print first. This is important so you will know what to expect and there will be no surprises.

Factor in the weather

After securing your costume, you should factor in the weather. For children, leotards and tights can help them stay warm. For adults, long sleeve or shirts under the costumes can add a layer of warmth.

Determine the right size

To have a comfortable experience, you need to ensure that you have the right size. With this, it is crucial that you know your size. Generally, for women’s costumes, it is based on their dress sizes. For men’s costumes, it is based on their jacket sizes.

Purchase early

It is not good to cram and wait until the last minute to order a Halloween costume. If you are buying from a known store, there will be a tendency that the stocks will run out soon. If you are buying online, you have to factor in the delivery time.

Try it

When you have the costume, it is crucial that you try it on – in case it does not fit. You should also make preparations like washing the costume and ironing it before wearing.

Practice in advance

To save, you can change your face using makeup. This is to help the costume look dramatic. Since you will do makeup, practice in advance so you will know how it goes. It can benefit if you do a practice run with your make up days before the event. More importantly, make sure that any makeup you use is hypoallergenic especially if you want to apply it some kids as well.
